Soreness After a Massage is Completely Normal

If you’ve booked a massage appointment, chances are you’re looking for a way to relax or alleviate some pain in your body. What’s sometimes common, however, is leaving a massage feeling some lingering or additional body pain. This doesn’t necessarily mean the massage didn’t work. While a massage session is meant to be peaceful and pain-relieving for you, it’s a lot of hard work on your body.

Getting a massage feels great, but there are many massage techniques and levels of pressure being applied that are placing strain on different areas. The rubbing, pushing, and pulling of the skin is doing a great job of moving beneficial nutrients and blood, but your body is likely not used to that kind of stimulation. These techniques and movements are going to cause soreness in your muscles later because they’re responding to the massage.

If you select a Swedish Massage, you may feel less soreness after the session since we’re mainly trying to relax your body with softer motions and less pressure. Deep Tissue Massage in particular, also offered at LaVida Massage of Livonia and a preferred method for athletes, works harder to soothe the underlying tissue. After a 60-minute session, you’re bound to feel the lingering effects, especially if you’re not too active and your muscles aren’t used to much movement.

What’s important to remember is that your concerns need to be heard. While soreness after a massage is common, discomfort during a massage shouldn’t be. If your massage therapist is using too much pressure, just let him or her know and it can be easily adjusted for maximum comfort. You don’t want to risk pain later by staying quiet when you're not comfortable.
